I worked up a TEAMS Results (see below image) for yesterday’s round to compare with the Individual Play (IP) Results. Looking at this comparison, Garlond shot the best round yesterday (#1 in IP) but wouldn't have won a dime in TEAMS play. Gerry Ruble (#2 in IP) won $42 under IP but would have only won $14 on Teams. Fred would have benefited by luck of the draw on Teams, going from winning $31 under IP to $57 under TEAMS, almost doubling his winnings. Lenny Cooke shot the 4th best round yesterday but wouldn’t have won a dime under TEAMS! Mike Piazza ranked 8th best but 5th in Payout and he doubled his money by luck of the draw. To go one further, look at Denny's scores....he placed 12th in Payout ($5) and 13th in Field Ranking but he won $28 on Teams! In Team results only 6 players won money whereas on IP there were 14 money makers.
In a nutshell, those that performed well and were rewarded under Individual Play did not fair nearly as well in Teams. And others that didn't do so well on IP won nicely in Teams. With Teams you do NOT have control of your winnings because it's the luck of the draw. With Individual Play you have all the control by shooting better scores than the rest of the playing field! I think people are getting confused thinking they have to always shoot better than they normally do....NOT THE CASE! In IP results six of our players yesterday shot negative to their quotas but still won money! You just have to shoot better scores than the rest of the playing field for that day of play. And you have a better chance of doing that when the playing field is “level” as it is under our “best 8” quota system.
I also encourage you to look at the Gross Payout (orange section) and the Field Ranking by Quota Difference (blue section). This is how you compare against the rest of the playing field for today’s play. It's fair and rewards you for your round of golf! Why would anybody want to be rewarded if they didn't do as well as someone else???? It's a real BUMMER when you shoot a good round and do NOT get rewarded. We've all experienced it and it's frustrating. Likewise, if you have a bad day with IP you pay the price and don't take away from another deserving player.
I think some are looking at the IP Results format and Quota issue from an individual basis and not fully understanding that the changes apply to EVERYONE! If rules, results, calculations apply the same to everyone then how is something not fair or how does it take away from your game? On the Quota issue...the World Handicap System changed your calculated scores to 8 out of 20 for your index (prior to 2020 it was 10 out of 20). They did this to stop cheaters from manipulating their handicaps and winning tournaments and trophies... and in small leagues, MONEY! That's stealing, lack of integrity and just bad character! By us going to 8 out of 20 we remove the chances of anyone playing the quotas game to their advantage.
So, what's wrong with eliminating the chances of anyone playing their quotas to their advantage???? What's wrong with all the players being rewarded according to the round they shot compared to the rest of the playing field???? The new IP system rewards the best players for that day, takes luck out of the equation, and rewards more of our members for each round. And the new “best 8” quota system better reflects a player’s scoring ability, making our competitions fair and making it a lot more difficult for cheaters to manipulate their quotas for their own benefit. How is keeping either of these bad for any of our members? If you have thoughts on this, I’d like to hear them.
Andy makes a good argument for the IP system. In fact, I did the same calculations for the March 23 play after Phil’s post. The results I calculated were essentially the same. On March 23, 10 players won money on the team play scenario and 15 players won on the IP scenario. The top 6 people on the IP scenario also won money on the team scenario; however, some won more under team and some won less.
Do we have cheaters that manipulate their quota? I trust everyone plays golf by the rules because we are all prior military and disciplined. I don’t look for cheaters in our group.
Best 8 vs last 10: Andy is correct. However, the best 8 does not react to a couple of bad rounds like the last 10.
Conclusion: I get discouraged when I play poorly and enjoy it when I have a good round. I pay yearly for my golf and whatever I put in our pot. If I get anything back, it goes back into the next round of golf. I don’t play to get paid, and I enjoyed the team system more than the IP.
I agree. I like the idea that under the IP format I'm not hurting other players' chances because I happen to suck that day. And with the best 8 quota calculation, my sucky performance that day isn't going to count against my quota, either; win, win! Garlond and Lenny would have gotten royally screwed under the TEAMS format! Say "NO" to TEAMS!!!
I am getting use to the IP format. I like it because if you play well you can be rewarded if you play bad you only hurt yourself and not the team. So I am ok with the IP format. That is my opinion I am not out to win the lotto just have fun and win some soda money and enjoy the group.
